BioSchwitters began producing his collages using rubbish and found objects; tickets, stamps, tobacco labels, newspaper, sweet wrappers, spools, cogs, wire, anything he could find. The word Merz was created by chance as a result of the presence of two words in an early assemblage - Kommerz und Prvatbank. He decided to use the abbreviated, Merz to refer to the combination, for artistic purposes, of all conceivable materials, having equal rights with paint.
